After defeating Italy South Africa qualified for the Round-16 of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 for the first time in a Group G encounter in Wellington on Wednesday.
The final group stage match South Africa’s 3-2 victory was its first win in the Women’s World Cup history in its second tournament appearance.

South African Desiree Ellis emotionally said,
“They fought like warriors. They fought like the heroines that we know that who they are. They fought to be historically remembered and they have made history not just getting our first win, but we are going to the round of 16 and it is freaking amazing.”
Coach Desiree Ellis was a founding member of the South Africa women’s side in 1993.
