Infosportsworld: Roger Federer hasn’t had his typical major success this year, but he did claim his fourth title of the amazing season when he beat Gilles Simons (7-6, 7-6) in the Shanghai Masters final on Sunday October 12 2014.
The massive win bumps him over Rafael Nadal in the ATP World Rankings to No. 2 positions, and helps him close the gap on No. 1 Novak Djokovic.
Roger Federer, who earlier this summer lost a brutal five set of match to Djokovic in the Wimbledon final match, he dismantled his rival in the tournament’s semi match.
The (6-4, 6-4) victory for the Swiss star had Novak Djokovic claiming that it was the best tennis player Federer had ever played against him before.
He finally carried that momentum into his Sunday’s win, taking each set against Simon via tiebreak set.
Federer said, “I feel unbelievable prestige to win this event. Especially putting my hands on the trophy for the first time is a wonderful happiest feeling”.
Actually Federer leads this tour with 61 wins and nine final appearances of this season. Though his only major final appearance this year was at this Wimbledon, he reached the semi finals at both the Australian Open and the US Open matches.
His first crown at Shanghai Tournament and his 23rd ATP Masters 1000 nearly never came about, though again. The 33 year old had to stave off five match points against Leonardo Mayer in his first match back from a three weeks break.
